“Give a Hand By the Sand” promises to be a fun & exciting week for Senior High campers.  Each event is somewhat different depending upon our ability to match services with the needs of the people with whom we are working.

"Service by the Sea" is moldable to your Middle School and/or High School youth group's needs.  Click here to jump to a description of this program.

Leadership: Mike Henning, who has been running the Servant Event program since 1999, will set up and facilitate your program. Your adult chaperones will be in charge of supervision of your group at all times, and will be called upon to share in some small-group leadership (all small-group materials will be ready to pick up and lead with little or no preparation).

Lodging:  Servant Event groups are most often housed at our Kure Beach facilities.  Click here to see Sand Dunes (East) and Pelican (West).  Lodging does limit the group size for this event.  Our minimum group size is 12 campers (not including chaperones).  If your group has fewer than 14 campers, we reserve the right to recruit other participants.  Maximum: 20 campers, 25 with adults (includes ten people sharing five double beds, and this number is NOT negotiable, due to fire codes and the nature of the service projects).  The site is in the town of Kure Beach, which is located 30 minutes south of Wilmington, NC.  Kure Beach is a quiet, family-oriented beach community.  The downtown area and city pier is six blocks north of our site.  One-half mile south of our site is the Ft. Fisher Civil War Memorial and museum.

Meals: At Kure Beach, we do not have our own food service program operating on a regular basis.  Most breakfasts (bagels, cereal, toast, juice, etc.) will be prepared by the servant group members in the kitchens of our lodging facilities.  Lunches and dinners will be a combination of meals prepared for us by members of Kure Memorial Lutheran Church or our Kure Beach staff.  Sunday evening is normally Domino’s pizza.  All meal costs are covered in your registration, including the Wednesday night seafood meal.  Depending on our ability to have Donna, our caterer, cook for us, Wednesday’s dinner might be at a restaurant, and your group will be informed of any additional needs for that meal beyond the $15.00 per person the camp will pay for.

Overall Schedule: Typically we will divide each day into three blocks. On most days two of those blocks will be devoted to the service learning projects listed below. The third block of each day will focus more on understanding and appreciating the unique aspects of living and playing on the beach (yes, you might have to actually play on the beach). Each day will include an opening and closing devotion and some time devoted to Bible Study. On our last night of camp together, we like to close with a service of affirmation, where participants will be called upon to make a written affirmation for all other participants, to be shared upon your departure.

Projects:  Elements of the week could include working with:

A local chapter of Meals on Wheels in several different locations

A soup kitchen that serves the underprivileged and homeless in Wilmington

A local Senior Adult Center, gathering for games and talent night

A local thrift store that supports local HELP agency (small food bank and short-term home expense assistance)

Running recreation options at Autumn Care, a managed-care facility

The local state park—serving the environment through beach clean up and trail maintenance

Kure Memorial Lutheran Church on some community projects

Entertainment:  These activities could include:

Sun bathing and wave crashing on the beach (the beach directly in front of our facility has a lifeguard station occupied by Kure Beach lifeguards)

A Surfing program through Surf Camp (this activity is scheduled for each program week at a specific time and the cost is included in your program fees)

Visiting the Kure Beach pier

Visiting the local shops in Carolina Beach (beach/surf shops and the like)

Riding the ferry to Southport (cost not included)

Fort Fisher Historical Site, with remnants of the American Civil War fort and small museum focusing on the pivotal battles for control of the port of Wilmington

Wilmington Front Street shopping and shipyard with a tour of the USS North Carolina (cost not included of battleship tour)

Transportation:  Agapé V Kure Beach Ministries can only transport up to 6 passengers to and from service projects once your group is at the event, so you will need to use your vehicles to travel to and from locations in most instances.  Groups need to plan for trips from Kure Beach to Wilmington almost daily, which can add about 100 miles per vehicle to your total trip.

Cost for the summer of 2008: (costs rose slightly beginning January, 2008 due to an increase in fees paid to an outside program source)

Participants:  $375.00 per youth (North Carolina Synod youth = $355.00)
Advisors:       $250.00 per adult (must be at least 21 years old) for up to 3 adults--
     additional adults pay full price.
Includes 4 nights lodging, 12 meals, program and services of Agapé V Kure Beach
Ministries staff, and some specific program options through local businesses.
All other expenses are the responsibility of your group members (shopping, etc.).

To Make a Reservation:

1.   Deposit of $100.00, along with your signed contract, will hold your event.

2.   A second deposit of $100.00 per camper (no adult deposit necessary) is due January 14th, 2008.

3.   A third deposit of $100.00 per camper (no adult deposit necessary) is due April 4th, 2008.

4.   Balance is due June 1st, 2008.

All deposits are non-refundable, unless we can find a group to take your place, in which case a portion of your deposit may be refunded.

Individual camper deposits are not refundable (i.e., if you send deposits for 14 campers in January, and two cancel, their $100.00 deposits are not refunded and may not be transferred to adult fees or toward the final balance due, but two other campers could take their places.).

We suggest that you use this deposit system to encourage participation within your group.  Campers are less likely to back out if they have invested in the trip personally, so we suggest they provide all or most of the first deposit.

Future Correspondence:  If you have further questions, feel free to contact Mike by phone, mail, or e-mail.  We will forward more information to you, including health history forms, camper and parent profile information, directions, and other helpful pre-event information upon completion of registration.

"Service by the Sea" differs a bit from "Give a Hand by the Sand," described above.  First, it is open to Middle School participants as well as High School.  Second, it has a greater focus on working together as a group (though some service projects still require that groups be split into smaller units).  Third, with a youth group focus, our program presence can be minimized so you can focus on your adult leaders building relationships with your group.  Mike (our Servant Event leader) will help you plan your event, coordinate with service agencies, and he or another trained leader will be at your event to lead as much (or little) as your leaders would like, including morning devotions, large group discussions, worship, music, and group-building activities.  Lastly, the schedule is moldable to your desired experience.  Some of the agencies listed above are not available to middle-schoolers due to age restrictions.  Costs and the reservation procedure are the same for both programs.

Use the contact information above to contact us about "Service by the Sea" opportunities.
